风铃木 (Tabebuia)

Kuching is awash in pink and white - not from the repainting of the buildings for Merdeka (National) Day but from the hundred of Tabebuia (风铃木) trees producing dense clusters of flowers.

Only two varieties (out of hundreds) are to be found along the roads in Kuching - the pink (粉红) and the white (白) ones. I love the flowers strewn alongside the roads or walkways - make for very pretty pictures. The white ones are very difficult to photograph - we need to wait for clear blue sky to show off the flowers!

Finally clear blue skies ....

Ramadan Buffet at the BCCK, Kuching - The Appetisers

As in the previous year, the appetisers were outstanding and there were lots of local favourites including cincalok and slated fish as well as many other international dishes.

The steamed prawns with a dash of lemon was really - I should not be eating so much but I just could not resist! Seen in the porcelain spoons are smoked salmon, pickled baby octopus, cuttlefish and a sushi toll.

The pickled vegetable was really good.

Keropok, taufu, lamb strips and pineapple - all very yummy!

The bakes mussels were excellent and they disappeared as fast as they appeared! I saw one woman scooped twenty onto her platter :-)

Salmon ..... tasty!

There were lots of other appetisers but I can only eat so much ... and so can only pick my favourites!

Ramadan Buffet at the BCCK, Kuching

Again this year, our whole family went to the Ramadan Buffet at the BCCK, Kuching.
It was excellent last year - especially their appetisers and desserts and so we were looking forward to the same again.
This year, the buffet was very good - some of the main courses are excellent like the roast whole lamb, baked mussels and the mee hoon (rice vermicelli) which was a bit like mee siam. The other main courses are staple good but general fare. However, as in the previous year, the appetizers and the desserts are outstanding and are my favorite sections.
As usual, we all overate as the spread was very good!
Did not take too many photos, mostly of the appetisers and dessert, we e-were too busy eating :-) I will have to post the images in batches....
If you can, do go. The venue is nice, the services good and the food excellent!

Solanum torvum (水茄)

The Solanum torvum (水茄) is a traditional Chinese medicinal plant, the root of which is used to treat a variety of aches/pains.
However, we have it in the garden for the pretty white flowers and fruits ....

Look out for the wicked thorns!

The flowers are small and very delicate.

The fruits are like smooth green balla - normally two or three fruits to a bunch.

It does very well in the shade of our various flowering vines. While it does not stand out, it is still a very pretty plant in the garden.
