Another Birthday

TK's second brother, Chang Yao (长耀), is celebrating his 70th Birthday and TK is having a dinner for him with the family. Traditionally, for Fuzhou (福州) families, they must serve longevity noodles (长寿面) or mee-sua (面线) with chicken and eggs.

Since the dinner is at a restaurant, TK and I talked about it and thought that it would be nice to do away with this traditional dish and replace it with this ....

It is a lovely multi-layer sponge cake in the form of a bowl of mee-sua (面线), chicken drumstick and eggs with a sprinkling of fresh spring onion and fried onion. Beside the bowl is a pair of chopsticks.

The mee-sua (面线), chicken drumstick and eggs are fresh cream, the fresh spring onion and fried onion are crystallised papaya and the chopsticks are moulded from chocolate. All sit on a red base of sugar paste.

The 3D cake was made by our good friends, PeterZhen of Bake&Chilled and it is a lovely cake!

  1. What a cake! When I first saw it, I went -- Phew! That was what we, the Foochou, had on our birthday in the good old days : a bowl of chicken soup with long life noodles, topped with TWO EGGS!! It sure brings back fond memory of my childhood and my mother.
